Weekend with the Fam

After a great pre-season race at Snelling, I decided to head up to Gold River for a few days instead of back to Santa Cruz. As I walked in the door, I was saddened to not be greeted by Brody, their yellow lab that died a couple of weeks ago. However, I was greeted by Helen, my 15 year old cousin that has similar features to Brody. Emmett and I even found that Brody's choke collar even fits her so that we can take Helen for walks in the evening instead of Brody.

Now, there are many reasons why I love coming up here, but I must share two specifically. First, the FOOD!! For those of you that are avid cyclists, you know that your life is filled with three things; riding, sleeping and eating. Trish always cooks the best food and there are always plenty of left overs. Also, the cupboards are full of cookies, fruit roll-ups, marshmallows, hot chocolate, etc. Second, Mark makes the best martinis! They are strong, dirty, shaken, icy and powerful! After sipping one of those, I'm definetly slurring the words.

Barrista!!! Ayiyayia!!!!

So...to make some money to pay off those horrible student loans and to keep my truck working, I got a part time job at a coffee shop. Never having worked an espresso machine before, I was nervous people were going to return their coffees. Acutally, a woman called me to inform me that I ruined her morning because I accidentally gave her cream cheese on the side of her bagel instead of humus. Please woman! If that ruins your morning, you have no worries in the world and you're pitiful for having to call and tell me that.

My first "race" of the season

Last Sunday, my clanging alarm made me jump out of bed at 5:20 a.m. so that I could leave by 6 to head out to the Pine Flats road race East of Fresno. It was so frigid cold that I was thinking that I must be crazy to be doing this! It was drizzling and in the low 30s as I got into my car. As I lined up to the start of the 60k race sans a warm up becasue all I wanted to do was get back into my car with some hot coco and drive back to a warm house, it came to my attention that it was just me and 3 McGuire girls. We were all taking turns pulling at the front at a nice Sunday ride tempo, when with about 20 miles left to go, they started to attack me. In a half ass kind of way, I pedaled up to catch the o-so-scary "attackers". When all of us got back together, I had to ask which one was next to do the cat and mouse game in order for me to know which one I was supposed to "catch". While spinning along through the climbs, the thought came through my head what it would be like if I wasn't riding with my training wheels and also without my heavy duty armadillo tires? I was so happy afterwards to get back to my truckito and find that Miss Mary was there with hot chocolate and lots of yummy things to eat.
